1cy Lesser Black-backed Gull Black R.S – 20130820

Seen in Leiden today: first-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus graellsii (Dutch intergrade), ringed in June at the nearby sea town of Katwijk aan Zee (a distance of only 10 kilometers).

This bird shows an a-typical tail pattern comprising of a narrow band and very few markings, giving it a distinct white look reminiscent of a Yellow-legged Gull.

The color of the plumage also appeared a warmer brown (especially on the scapulars) and not the dark chocolate brown of a typical Lesser Black-backed Gull. Compare the images below for instance with photos that I took in Katwijk aan Zee recently of other Lesser Black-backed Gulls that have been ringed as part of the same project.

Tail pattern
