1cy Lesser Black-backed Gull with pink bill – 20130823

This odd-looking first-calendar year Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus graellsii was at my local gull patch in Leiden this morning. It stood out because of its pink bill with black tip, reminiscent of first-calendar year Glaucous Gulls.

The bill looks blunter and bigger at the base but that might be because of the unusual color.

As mentioned, I associate such bill coloration more with first-cycle Glaucous Gulls Larus hyperboreus:

Apart from the bill though, it looked very much like a regular Lesser Black-backed Gull.
