Common Gulls – 20140130

A short study of some Common Gulls Larus canus that I came across today. All photos were taken at the same location in Leiden, The Netherlands.

Bird #1

Adult in winter (basic) plumage with a slightly dark gray tone (compare with Bird #2).

P10 with large mirror, not fully covering the tip. P9 with large mirror, P8 without mirror and a black smudge halfway the inner web. P5 with a complete black subterminal band. No black on P4.

Bill and legs dull green/yellow.

Bird #2

Adult in winter (basic) plumage with a slightly lighter gray tone (compare with Bird #1).

P10 with large mirror, almost completely covering the tip. P9 with large mirror, P8 with small mirror on inner web. P5 with a complete black subterminal band. No black on P4.

Bill and legs yellow/green.

Bird #3

Adult very similar to Bird #2, but with a slightly larger mirror on P9 and a small black spot on P4.

P10 with large mirror, not completely covering the tip. P9 with large mirror, P8 with large mirror on inner web. P5 with a complete black subterminal band. P4 with a small black spot on the outer web.

Bill and legs a brighter yellow/green.

Bird #5

Third-calendar year in 2nd-winter plumage.

P10 and P9 with medium mirrors. P8 without a mirror. Black in the primary coverts and a brown hue in the greater and median coverts indicate sub-adult. No black in the tail.

Bill and legs gray/green.

Bird #6

Third-calendar year in 2nd-winter plumage. Compared to Bird #5 much more black in the primary coverts and much more brown in the lesser, median and greater coverts.

P10 with medium mirror, P9 with small mirror on inner web. P8 without a mirror. Black in the primary coverts and a brown hue in the greater and median coverts indicate sub-adult. A few black spots in the tail.

Bill and legs yellow/green.
