2cy Great Black-backed Gull with yellow/pink-ish bill – 20140216

This first-cycle, second-calendar year Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus was seen on 16 February 2014 at the BP Whiting refinery, Indiana, USA, together with Amar Ayyash and Matthew Winks.

Matthew drew our attention to this bird (which was somewhat hidden in a group of other gulls) because of the extremely light-coloured bill. Such a bill doesn’t fit a Great Black-backed Gull of this age: it should be mostly black with a faint pink base.

It wasn’t until we got some good views before we were able to figure out what we were looking at.
