A selection of 2nd-cycle and 3rd-cycle Thayer’s Gulls Larus thayeri (3rd-calendar year and 4th-calendar year), seen in the southern Lake Michigan region, USA, in February 2014.

Bird #1 – 2nd-cycle / 3rd-calendar year or possibly 3rd-cycle / 4th-calendar year

Individual with adult-looking inner primaries and mirror on P10. Much brown in the coverts, dark mottling in the neck and flanks, broad tail-band. The bill has a light-pink base, yellow tip and black subterminal band.

Similar to individual #1, with adult-looking inner primaries and mirror on P10. Much brown in the coverts, dark mottling in the neck, flanks and belly. Tail predominantly white with black remnants. The bill has a light-pink base, yellow tip and black subterminal band.

Adult-like (including pattern on outer primaries), but with brown in the coverts, black markings in the tail and on the bill.
