Adult Lesser Black-backed Gull Green SAAP with black on secondaries – 20150528

This adult male Lesser Black-backed Gull Larus fuscus graellsii (Dutch intergrade) was caught while breeding and subsequently ringed as Green S.AAP in Zaandam, the Netherlands on 28 May 2015.

Surprisingly, the outer secondaries S2, S3, S4 and S5 show black markings on the outer web, something that I have never come across in adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls. It could indicate a young adult (5th calendar year for instance) but Lesser Black-backed Gulls are very difficult to age based on black markings such as those seen in the  primary coverts.

It will be interesting to follow this gull over the coming years to see if it will retain these markings or if they will disappear.
