The first (and last) time I was in Le Portel, France was in July 2010 and I still have fond memories of observing large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls Ichthyaetus melanocephalus then.
Last week I briefly visited the area with good friend Jacob and although gull numbers were low, we were able to enjoy one good photo session at the famous Quai de la Violette which overlooks the English Channel. The soft light and blue-grey colors of the sea and sky again resulted in good photo opportunities.
Three Med Gulls in particular were very cooperative. Conveniently they were in the 3 main plumages: first-winter, second-winter and adult winter. Gorgeous birds.
