Adult European Herring Gull Black/Blue 9N in breeding plumage and pair-bonding – 20151225

This nice encounter with Dutch-ringed Herring Gull Larus argentatus argenteus Black/Blue 9.N at the end of December last year proves two things nicely: that female adult Herring Gulls tend to obtain their breeding plumage (a complete white head) earlier than males do, and that adult Herring Gulls can pair up long before the breeding season.

The gulls were seen in the harbour of Scheveningen (the Hague), the Netherlands, 25 December 2015, shortly 2 months after Black/Blue 9N was ringed at that same location.
