3CY Lesser Black-backed Gull Green YBTA – 20160520

It’s the time of year when sub-adult gulls are starting to appear in the gull colonies, often the very same colony where they were born.

Also known as ‘prospectors’, these gulls are too young to breed but they use these visits to get an idea of what goes on in the colony and if it is a suitable place for them to start breeding in one or two years time.

It’s always nice to see such a gull return that was color-ringed a few years ago and see it doing well, as was the case with the return of Lesser Black-backed Gull Green YBTA to the gull colony in IJmuiden on 20 May 2016.

The last time we saw it was shortly after it was ringed in July 2014 as a fledgling.
