5CY Lesser Black-backed Gull Green YBMT with retarded plumage – 20170410

When I saw this Lesser Black-backed Gull flying past I thought I was looking at a fourth-calendar year: there is no mirror on P10 and P9 and the underwing coverts have brown edges.

However, the colour ring reveals its true age: it was ringed as a pullus in July 2013 in the gull colony of IJmuiden which means it is actually a fifth-calendar year bird.

Another nice example therefore that you have to be careful when ageing young Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

All photos were taken in the gull colony of IJmuiden Forteiland, the Netherlands, 10 April 2017.
